Munich Re names Nieto South America CEO as Biendarra heads to HQ

Munich Re has promoted Rodrigo Nieto to CEO for South America with Anja Biendarra returning to the reinsurer’s headquarters to take on a new role.

Nieto steps up into the Bogotá, Colombia-based role having most recently served Munich Re as client executive South America. He had held that role ever since Nieto first moved to Munich Re in February last year after a decade at rival Swiss Re, latterly as head of sales, Latin America.

His career also includes two years at KPMG and more than four years at Aon as a vice president within the broker’s international business unit.

Biendarra is heading to Munich in what will be the latest step in her nearly 25 years at Munich Re. She had held the Bogota-based CEO for South America role since 2017.

During her time at Munich Re, Biendarra has held various roles, predominantly with a property focus. Those roles include senior property underwriting executive based for both Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Munich Re’s Latin and South America operation boasts offices in Bogotá as well as São Paulo, Brazil and Mexico City.

The Bogotá office operates as a regional hub that is also responsible for other parts of the region.
