CSU: (Re)insurers should brace for “above-normal” 2022 Atlantic hurricane season

In this video, Colorado State University (CSU) researcher Phil Klotzbach tells The Insurer TV the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season will be characterised by “above-normal” activity for the seventh consecutive year.

Klotzbach pointed to research forecasting 19 named storms, nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes, citing “above-average” activity relative to the 30-year average.

These figures roughly tally with analysis conducted by The Insurer based on research from several weather agencies and universities, including CSU. An average of the compiled data shows a forecast of 18 named storms, eight hurricanes and four major hurricanes.

During this interview we discuss:

  • The forecast for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season
  • How it compares with previous years
  • Climate change as a catalyst for natural catastrophes
  • How forecasting models can help (re)insurers understand catastrophes and mitigate risk
  • The challenges for (re)insurers of multiple events making landfall in the same area
