Great American Insurance Group’s David Thompson has been appointed president and chief operating officer of the company’s property and casualty (P&C) business, succeeding veteran Gary Gruber who will retire on 1 April after more than four decades at the carrier.
Thompson (pictured right), who will take on the new roles from 1 February, has been at Cincinnati, Ohio-based Great American since 2006. Since first joining the business, he has moved up the ranks and assumed roles with increasing responsibility, including divisional president.
In 2014, Thompson was appointed divisional group president, and in 2017 was promoted to senior vice president. Those roles have seen him work directly with various specialty property and casualty units as well as several of Great American Insurance Group’s shared service functions such as reinsurance, predictive analytics and Dempsey & Siders Insurance Agency.

Gruber has been at Great American Insurance Group for almost 45 years, the last five of which have been as president and COO of its P&C operation. Before that, Gruber served as executive vice president from 2010 to 2016.
