In a memorial on the GenStar website, the E&S insurer noted that Brooks joined General Reinsurance Corporation in 1969 and served in numerous roles in his three decades at the company.

“We will miss Kevin greatly and extend to his family our sincere condolences,” GenStar said.

Brooks was the founding chairman, president and CEO of GenStar, leading the E&S writer until 2001. He later led wholesale insurer Argonaut Specialty when it was launched by Argo in 2005.

Brooks was well known in the excess and surplus lines market. From 1989-1990 he served as president of Napslo – now known as the Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association. He received Napslo’s Charles McAlear Award in 1999, which honours individuals who have made significant contributions to the wholesale, specialty and surplus lines industry.

Brooks also faithfully served his country, retiring as a colonel in the US Marine Corps Reserve.
