Blue chip insurer Beazley has appointed Matthew Westhoff as head of US large commercial property, based in New York.
Westhoff begins at Beazley after more than five years at Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI), where he was vice president with responsibility for property in the northeast region.
Before that, he was regional property leader for the New York metro area at AIG between 2009 and 2014.
He held the role of assistant vice president at Sterling & Sterling for three and a half years prior to that, and was an account representative at Liberty Mutual for one year.
He began his career in 2003 as an underwriter for Utica National Insurance Group.
In his new role, Westhoff will manage the US-based team, working alongside the property team in London and reporting to Beazley’s global head of commercial property, Simon Jackson.
Joining Westhoff in New York is Ashley Irwin, who takes on the role of commercial property underwriter after nearly two years in general property at Ironshore.
She was a property broker at MMC for the best part of 11 years before that, beginning her insurance career in 2007.
In addition, Henry O’Kill will return to Beazley’s London office in late 2020 after a secondment to New York to develop the US operation’s strategy.
Jackson commented: “I’m delighted to appoint two highly experienced, specialist underwriters to our commercial property team in the United States.
“We continue to focus on forging strategic relationships with brokers and large property clients and to ensure we are well represented in both London and the US in order to provide them with greater choice and accessibility to our underwriters.”
